All scheduled workshop dates for 2019 have been completed. Please join my email list to be the first to hear when dates for 2020 are announced, or contact me directly to book a private or semi-private workshop.
Workshops have no more than three attendees, so I can provide custom coaching and mentoring on any aspect of photography or business that you need (excluding off-camera lighting). Guidance will be in the field as we shoot, as well as back at the hotel, or during other down times (mid-day, dinner, etc). You are guaranteed to receive at least 5 hours of coaching, plus a follow-up phone or video chat after our trip, and special access to a private Facebook group. Mentoring rates normally begin at $250 for a 90-minute private session, so this workshop represents significant savings plus the added thrill of putting things into immediate practice photographing wild horses.
Want to know about photography techniques? How to photograph horses? How to get creative with your camera settings? How to understand and use natural light? Creative composition? Incorporating emotion into your photos? Or maybe you are an advanced photographer who needs help on the business side of things. Marketing tips? Business set-up? SEO? We can also critique images or do a portfolio review. It's all fair game.
The area we're going to has large groups of wild horses (including foals) in many interesting colors, scenic mountain backgrounds, and lots of interaction between horses/bands. I am a licensed tour guide at this location, with years of experience locating wild horses and getting into prime vantage points to photograph them. The future of this special herd is uncertain. Don't miss your chance to see and photograph these incredible horses, while you also grow your photography and business skills.
DATES:
2020 dates TBD
PRICE: $1895 per person

Custom mentoring and coaching on any aspect of photography, horse photography, business, or marketing you wish (excluding off-camera lighting). One follow-up phone or video mentoring session (90 minutes). Transportation between the Hampton Inn in Tooele, Utah and our photography locations each day. Experienced guidance to find wild horses and navigate the roads. Bottled water and a cooler to store snacks/lunch (food not included). Maximum of 3 tour participants per workshop.
WHAT'S *NOT* INCLUDED: Lodging, airfare or transportation to/from our meeting point in Tooele other than to our photography locations on the day(s) of the tour, meals, camera equipment.
ITINERARY:
You should arrive the day prior to our start date, as we will depart very early on Day 1.
DAYS 1 through 3: We will be out finding and photographing wild horses from before/at sunrise to after sunset; coaching will take place as we shoot as well as during down times such as mid-day. Locations are remote. We leave from the Hampton Inn in Tooele, which has an early breakfast included in their room price; we need to bring any food/drinks for the day with us (I will provide a cooler and bottled waters). We will return to Tooele in time to eat dinner at one of the local restaurants (meal price not included); our mealtime is a great time to discuss the day and continue our coaching.
DAY 4: We will leave to photograph as normal for the early morning, returning to the hotel by approximately noon so that everyone can leave for the airport in time to catch late afternoon or evening flights.
REQUIREMENTS: You should have a solid working knowledge of your specific camera gear; while I am happy to help with questions, I will not be familiar with every camera model out there. I strongly suggest that your general photography skills be mid to intermediate level or above, although it's fine if you've never photographed horses or wildlife before. This trip will involve lots of walking over varied terrain (mostly flat, but with uneven ground), and involves long, moderately strenuous days, so the ability to walk moderate distances of a mile or so and carry/hold your gear is a must. Weather may vary, so we should be prepared for chilly morning/evenings, and lots of sun during the day, but conditions can change quickly. We will be monitoring the weather carefully. Once you book, I can provide some suggestions for how to dress and what to bring in terms of clothing and camera equipment.
DISCLAIMERS: Once you book, you will need to sign a liability waiver in order to participate. Also, the weather is outside our control. Because the roads are not paved, rain may make certain areas impassable, although I will be driving a 4WD vehicle suitable for the terrain. I strongly suggest purchasing trip insurance for this reason, as no weather-related refunds may be given. In the event of inclement weather on your tour date, I'm happy to include you on a different date during the same week at no charge -- if there is space available in the vehicle. We are not guaranteed to find wild horses, but I have never gone to this location and NOT found them, since I have years of experience observing their favorite spots within this terrain. I am fully licensed through the Bureau of Land Management to offer commercial guide services at this location.
